My main research project involves performing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to find genes in maize and Arabidopsis that are associated with carotenoid and tocopherol compounds. Breeders can then select on these genes to develop maize lines that have high provitamin A and vitamin E content. This biofortification of maize can assist in reducing micronutirent malnutrition in the developing world.
My research interests involve using my statistical background to develop optimal analyses for bioinformatics data. In particular, I am interested in the analysis of discrete traits such as maize kernel color. Taking discreteness into account should result in more powerful significance tests of hypotheses, which would ultimately allow for greater dissection of these traits' genetic components.
